The Unexpected Holiday Stress: Gambling and Mental Health

December 1, 2024

The holidays are a time for joy, celebration, and connection with loved ones. But for some, this time of year can also bring financial stress, heightened emotions, and increased social pressures. These factors can make individuals more vulnerable to engaging in risky behaviors, such as excessive gambling.

As problem gambling counselors, we’ve seen firsthand how gambling can negatively impact individuals and their families. It can lead to financial strain, relationship problems, and a decline in mental health.

Here are some critical points to remember:

  • Gambling is not a solution to financial stress. While it may seem like a quick way to make money, the odds are always against you.

  • Set limits and stick to them. Decide beforehand how much money you’re comfortable spending and walk away once you’ve reached that limit.

  • Be mindful of your emotions. If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or depressed, avoid gambling as a coping mechanism.

  • Seek support if you need it. If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling, there are resources available to help. [add TBI resources page link]

If you find yourself struggling, please reach out to a mental health professional or a support organization. There is no shame in asking for help. Share this with someone today to help us spread the word and break the stigma around problem gambling.

Remember, the holidays should be a time of joy and connection. Don’t let gambling overshadow the true spirit of the season.
