Your Relationship is an Investment

September 5, 2024

From Robin Witt, Director of Relationship Dynamics:

The “grass is greener on the other side” is an illusion that can launch us into a tailspin. Do you want to know where the grass is greener? Where you water it!

Often couples expect their relationships to be easy, lush, and rewarding without putting in the labor of love. Relationships are fulfilling when we treat the word love as a verb and invest in the union. Too bad we can’t just sit back and watch love bloom. We must roll up our sleeves and invest in one another.

Here are some tips to nourish your relationship:

  1. Choose to see the best in your partner. Not every mistake or ill-phrased comment is an attack. Give each other the benefit of the doubt.  Talk about it before you confront it.
  2. Carve out time for one another. Prioritize date nights, family dinners, or an activity with other couples. Have fun and enjoy each other’s company.
  3. Have the hard conversations. Aim to understand one another’s viewpoint without talking to win or be right.
  4. When things get difficult, seek counsel from mentors, clergy, or marriage therapists. There will be bumps in the relationship, don’t daydream about green grass…dig in and fix what’s broken.

Our relationships are not disposable, they are investments. They take time, energy, and intention. How can you love your partner better today?
